:: HIDDEN TOWN

"Gregor Graf draws the viewer's gaze to the city of Linz completely purged of signs. With purposely intentional retouching, he emphasizes the architectonic and structural features of the city in an extreme way. The streets seem unreal, culturally interchangeable and alien. They call for a new kind of perception beyond the realm of our familiar experiences and patterns. At the same time, though, these pictures open up a view of architecture that is otherwise blocked and "clarified" spatial systems." - www.gregorgraf.net

I discovered this work after reading an article by Adrian Shaughnessy "The Laypersons guide to Graphic Design".
What life might be like without Graphic Design.
This links with my brief "10 things you should know about graphic design", and getting the general people to understand what graphic design is and where they'd be without it.
Excellent photo's that really make you think of life without design...it'd all be so boring and bland!

:: TIMM KETERITZ

All the work featured here is called "VIRTUAL WATER inside products" by a guy called Timm Keteritz, originally from Germany but is now in San Francisco.
I discovered his work in the latest IDN magazine 'we heart infographics' issue.
Here he decided to "combine two elements that he found being constantly underestimated: infographics and the importance of water.
Keteritz developed THE VIRTUAL WATER PROJECT as the footprint of a person, a company and a nation, defined by the total volume of fresh water used to produce the commodities, goods and services consumed by that person, company or nation."

I love the simple symbols to represent some information. Completely simplifying it in order to it to be better understood and visually engaging.
This work also links perfectly with the sustainability brief I'm doing at the moment, I love it!

The Poster

"Based on the data gathered by Hoeckstra et al. in their study »Water Footprint of Nations« German designer Timm Kekeritz created this double-sided poster. One side visualizes the water footprint of selected nations, emphasizing the im- and export of virtual water. The other side shows the virtual water content of selected foods and commodities.
The design itself is minimalistic - using silhouettes and typography only. The fonts used are TheSans and TheSerif by Berlin-based Dutch type designer Luc(as) de Groot. The printed version also shows water drops in a shiny finish, emphasizing the virtual character of the water contained in our everyday goods." - www.traumkrieger.de/virtualwater/

:: FELTON

Some work that I've been looking at as some inspiration for my 'Sustainable.." brief and looking at Infographics.
This work is by a guy called Nicolas Felton AKA. Feltron.
He works in various media, besides print and online, he has also designed for industries as diverse as skateboarding and banking.
I love his simple designs and subjects he tends to work with.

:: VISUAL EMISSIONS

An Australian advert to make people think about there carbon footprint. What you see in the video is invisible, but it's happening around us every minute of everyday. When put like this it really makes you think about what harm we are all doing, just by doing simple everyday things, like flicking the switch of a kettle.
Really clever video...again, links well with my 'Sustainability' brief I've got going on at the moment.

:: NOTHING BUT ADS

Discovered this, whilst doing some research for one of my briefs.

But it's the everyday world we live in, but without people and walls etc, but it's just made up of all the advertising and brands we come across on a daily basis.
It's a very clever video, that makes you think about how much design effects us yet how much is forgotten about!

:: The Clock Video

I was recommended to check out this video, as it links in perfectly with one of my briefs I'm working on about sustainability, designers and the tools/equipment used.
The winner of the D&AD student video awards 2007.
Created by Scott Evans.

Radiohead announced that they would receive video promo submissions (via student artists) to song "The Clock", which is off of Thom Yorke's (lead singer) latest solo album (2006), Eraser. As the song revolves around "time" and our (ab)use of the environment.

:: QUENTIN DELOBEL

From now until Christmas, we have been given the chance to write our own briefs, one's that we will benefit from in the way we work and the work we wish to be included in our portfolios.
For one of my briefs, I have set myself the challenge of designing a visual identity and promotional material for a exhibition (one I've just made up myself). In a museum similar to London's 'Design Museum'.
So I will need to design the identity, local outdoor advertising, venue information signs, a diagram of the set-up, shop material, such as pen designs, bag designs etc

I've come across the work of Quentin Delobel, who's work is absolutely amazing. He looks at stuff that I have started to get into. Unfortunately his website is in french, so I don't know much about the work he's produced and the brief he has responded to. But from the pictures, this is some influential design that links with one of my own briefs.

Not only is it the exhibition graphics that I find really influencial, but almost all of the work featured on his website!
He works a lot with type and layout as well and creating books. Also, I've noticed there is a kind of information graphics going on with his work aswell.
It's all so beautiful!
So below are a few more examples of his work that I really like...

:: SAATCHI AND SAATCHI

Since focusing my new briefs on information graphics, I've since been keeping my eyes peeled for some influential design.
I found these campaign posters on a random website I came across whilst looking for some information graphics.

All work as infographics, art and advertising. They are the subway maps from New York, London and Sydney.
Designed by Saatchi and Saatchi.
It's s simple but a really effective piece of design for Sony Walkman.

:: DON'T PANIC - Design the pack

Our first brief back after the summer and to get a head start into the third year, we given the chance to do a week long brief for "Don't Panic'.
The Don't Panic Pack is a unique free publication found in carefully selected independent shops, bars, universities and art spaces. Also distributed outside alternative music events and launch parties, it contains all sorts of arts and culture goodies and information for cities all around the world with the emphasis on design and the future of our planet.
We had a choice, to either design the actual pack, or the poster that you would find inside and a baseball hat design.
I chose to design the pack.
Each month, there is a theme that we needed to base our designs around and this month the theme was
"DESIRE"

Below is the final design that I uploaded onto the website for people to vote for

This is how it actually looks on the website, as it if wins, it will be printed onto brown 'envelope' style paper.
Please, if you have chance...VOTE for my design!
The website is
http://www.dontpanicmedia.com/designthepack/entry/?id=4752

You have to register in order to vote, but should only take a moment!
ThanQ

Below are some other designs I did in response to pack, too be honest, I quite liked them all, but unfortunately couldn't submit them all. But I'm still happy with the way these ones turned out.

Using this one "Want"...I started making a typeface using ladies legs, but only created these letters. Since completing this brief I am currently trying to produce the whole alphabet in this style...which should be up on here shortly.

Overall, I really really enjoyed this brief and think it's got me moving and my creative juices after the long summer break. I'm going to continue checking out the don't panic website and see if any upcoming briefs tickle my fancy...

:: I WANT MY CV TO LOOK LIKE THIS...

I've been pondering what to do for my CV, as it's time I should be thinking about what I want to do and how I want to produce it.
I want to design a CV that will stand out from other's on an employer's desk and catch the eye.
This one shown below is a perfect example of what I'd love to do something like...it's designed by "effektive design".

It's beautiful!!
